Needy Face

Even after I walk him, feed him, play with him, I sometimes get this face.

What does it mean? I've come to think that it means I spend too much time on the computer, and not enough time with Buddy. So he thinks. Usually resolved with a quick training session.

Much better!

Lifted Quarantine

And Buddy is a happy pup! Because of my littler animals, I've trained him never to go into my room without an invitation, and he will obediently sit in the hallway. But those woe-is-me looks, I can't stop. He always looks so sad when I leave him outside!

So, after two days of open windows and vigorous scrub of, oh, everything with pure vinegar (a first for me; I usually do 3:1 water:vinegar solution for cleaning) I lifted his ban and let him in. Yes, I'm a hypochondriac and probably freaked for nothing. But at least I care enough about my pets health to freak, right?

Hanging out by the computer desk,
his favorite spot.

Quarantined

So, in the wee hours of the night, I woke up to this God awful hacking sound and began a frantic search for it's origins. It turned out to be coming from my mouse, JD (Jack Daniels). I couldn't actually believe it at first, because I've slept through tornado's before, but his breathing was loud enough to wake me up. But it was him.

I don't know if he had a cold or what, but I thought those always took longer to kill, so I don't really know what it was. (And it did kill him; I buried him this morning at 7am, before the vets were even open for me to take him in.) Then I proceeded to go to the store and buy a bottle of white vinegar and a few packs of baby wipes, and do a full clean of the whole room, including the rats cage. I'm very worried about it being contagious, whatever it was.

Buddy is not happy with this turn of events; I've temporarily banned him from the bedroom until I'm satisfied that whatever disease is gone for good. He's been scratching at the door all day wanting to come in and steal my bed lol. I've still got to wipe down the desk and the walls with vinegar, and I'll have to do something with JD's cage. I'll probably clean it a few times and move it to the closet until I find another use for it.

What a day.

Fa La La... Nah.

I'm thinking Buddy and I will skip out on decorating this year. He isn't exactly reliable around a tree. I am planning on doing a Christmas themed photoshoot with him, though, so keep an eye out for that. Probably next week.

Back to decorating; If we did, it would probably just be my bedroom, since I don't actually get a say in what goes in the living room. But I don't even have a Christmas tree. I don't even know where to get one. Hmm.

Buddy really isn't liking the cold weather, either. He refused to walk this morning. Refused. Put his paw down and said no. I can't wait to see how he handles snow! (assuming we get some, which I think we might.) That'll be fun.

I have a prima donna pet. I'm still coming to terms with it. (lol no, I accepted Buddy's quirks a long time ago.)

Socialization Rant

So, I've always been very pleased with Buddy's people skills. He listens to what I tell him, he'll sit, and he'll accept petting from strangers. He always ducks his head a little bit, but I don't blame him. Most of the people he meets have worse socialization skills than he does. All in all it's wonderful.

I'm not here to complain about him, which you may or may not have guessed. I'm here to complain about the people. Why do people see someone walking their dog and assume it's completely okay to come up do whatever you want? People grabbing at him, pushing him around. It's like they think because he's a medium sized dog who they all seem to think is a golden retriever (???) they can do absolutely anything.

It's starting to take a toll on his confidence. He's becoming more skittish around strange people, and I'm certainly becoming more of a "cold bitch" according to the people I tell to keep their grubby hands off my dog. I really don't care what they think, though. I just want them to stop terrorizing my dog!

I'm seriously considering getting one of those "Do Not Pet" leashes and collars for him. As much as I enjoy healthy socialization between him and strangers for the help it provides, I'm getting so pissed off about people who act like they've never seen a dog before in their lives.

Alright, end rant. Well, except for one last point.

Seriously??

Wordless Wednesday

How about a walk?

Happy December!

Okay, seriously, someone needs to come give me lessons on how to use my new computer, because I've admitted defeat and am typing this on my mother's desktop computer. It's just soo much better than any of my past laptops, which is amazing. It would be even more amazing if I could figure out how to actually work it. But I digress.

What has Buddy been up to while his mother was beating her head against the wall in frustration, you ask? Not much! Though he may or may not have a little (older) sister coming (not a dog). More details when I get them; As of now, my instructions have been vague. Lol.

One positive? His hair is coming back for the winter! I have officially resigned myself to having a bald dog in the spring and the fall, as nothing I do seems to stand any significant chance against his allergies. All I can do is wait it out when they flare up and flip off anyone who says it's because I'm neglecting him.

Now you're caught up on our sub par week, so expect normal posting to resume tomorrow, with Wordless Wednesday!

Switching Computers

I'm currently switching over to a new laptop, I have none of my images or anything really that I had saved, so it may take a few days for me to finish the transition. You're patience is great! :)

Phasing out the Crate

Guess who has spent the night outside of his crate two nights in a row? Buddy! Guess who did destroy anything, have any accidents, or go crazy running around and barking and wake everyone up either night? Buddy! It seems I have successfully done away with the crate.

I started by letting him stay out while I went to the store or to run errands, and from there I worked up more and more time with him out of it, and now I'm happy to say he will go in the crate no more! (Well, we'll keep it for if it's ever necessary, but I don't anticipate that it will be)

Yay for Buddy!

Something in the Works

That will benefit myself and Buddy greatly! I'm going to be setting up a mini house to live in while I'm at college, so that I don't have to live with my parents or worry about finding a place to live with my 50lb mutt. Which is so much fun by the way.

When I can get the money, I'm going to fence in around it as well, so Buddy will finally have something he's never had before--A place to safely play completely off leash, with neither of us having to worry! I'm so excited, and I'm sure he would be too, if he knew what was going on.

None of this will be happening until 2014, I'm sure, but it's only around the corner anyways! So look forward to updates on that.

Basically, everything you see here will be mine! (And Buddy's, of course)

An Explanation Owed

So I know I missed posting a few days, and I feel like I should explain. I sort of had an impromptu weekend packed full of plans that other people made for me and declined to inform me of.

My mother had a garage sale of sorts over the weekend that I somehow got roped into helping her with, which took all day Friday and Saturday, and Sunday my friend came in the early morning to pick me up and we spent the day in the city (I don't think she'd planned that at all, it just sort of happened.) Add in my night life which decided it wanted to kick up this weekend, and I haven't had 5 minutes to myself since Thursday. My stepdad got to take care of Buddy for me while I was gone; I literally only came home to sleep and was gone as soon as I woke up (5am) all weekend.

So anyways, don't expect that to happen again ever, because I don't usually have any semblance of a social life. Sorry, guys!

Scared Pup

Can dogs be scared of the dark? Apparently. Buddy didn't handle it so well the other night when the power went out. Quite frankly, neither did I, but that's beside the point. I had to get him out of his crate and snuggle him. Crazy dog.

Reminisce & Camera Troubles

First, happy Veterans Day, and a big thank you to all our brave veterans!

Secondly, I've been feeling pretty terrible of late. I wish I knew once and for all what was driving Buddy's fur away.

Look at how furry he used to be! What happened? It's driving me crazy, but I just can't seem to fix it.

Oh, and on a final note, if any of my fantastic readers could recommend a good camera (cheap, not a DSLR) that would be great, because my old one is starting to seriously act up. I haven't been able to get a decent pic in awhile, because it shuts off randomly, won't take pics when I hit the button, etc. etc. I've had it a few years, though, and I'm far from the most responsible with my cameras, so I suppose it had to quit on me sometime.

And then sometimes...

Accepting Kitties

Well, folks, it's finally happened; Buddy has accepted that the cats are here to stay, and now he doesn't seem to have a problem with them.

Big improvement for the dog that thought they were chew toys, or on occasion dirty random things that needed to be licked obsessively. After 6 months, we finally have peace.

Well, sort of. We thought we had two sisters, but the sex-change fairy must have visited us one night, because Reef decided to become a boy! Since we already had a boy cat, things have been a bit like a war zone in here. We're hoping they can move past it.

Zukes Jerky Naturals: Review and Giveaway!

Yes, this is Wednesday, and yes, normally I would be doing the Wordless Wednesday blog hop, but I figured y'all had enough wordless picture posts last week. So today we'll be reviewing Zukes Jerky Naturals Grain Free Dog Treats, as well as having our very first giveaway!

A package? What could that be?
Totally awesome treats!
The kitties were interested too.
A bit about the company:
The light bulb moment
Anyone who's experienced an aha! moment can usually recollect with giddy excitement the exact date, time, and place that the proverbial light bulb went off. And often, that flash in time is the inception of a great idea. For Patrick Meiering, it was 1995 during a hike in the Colorado Mountains with his typically energetic companion, Zuke. Noticing that Zuke had become exhausted, Patrick broke off a piece of his energy bar and tossed it to him. Zuke perked right up. And there it was, the moment that Patrick realized that pets needed healthy, all-natural treats, just as much as people do.
The Zuke's adventure begins
From the beginning, it has been essential that Zuke's treats are formulated with only natural ingredients providing the specific nutrients your cat or dog needs. But early on our fledgling team realized that Zuke's was about much more than healthy treats. Instead, we consciously created a company focused on exploring and adventuring with your dog. About the love you get from your cat. And the pursuit of a healthier life that makes pets and people happier. This is what motivated us then and what motivates us today. Zuke's wants to keep the adventure going by giving our pets something to wag about.
A commitment to caring
Come to the Zuke's office and you'll see dogs curled up under a workstation or bounding in our backyard creek, and we love to go home to our cats snuggled in on the couch. We're passionate pet lovers just like you. Our pets are a great source of motivation and give us so much, so it's only natural that we want to give them the best. That means the finest meats, premium grains, fruits, vegetables, and oils available. All natural ingredients, all sourced in the USA (except our rabbit and venison which comes from New Zealand) with final products made in the USA. The commitment to our products stems from the love and care we have not just for our own pets, but for dogs and cats everywhere.
As Zuke's grows, it's more important than ever that we remain true to our original intentions - to insure that the passion we have for our pets shapes the products we make, the company we continue to become, and world we live in.
We were sent three bags of the Jerky Naturals to review, one of each flavor-Lamb, Beef, and Turkey. The Lamb treats have 17.3 calories each, the Beef have 17.8 calories each, and the Turkey has 16.6 calories each. The soft texture and large size of the treats make them perfect for breaking into smaller pieces for each training session; I can go an entire day and only use two or three of the treats between both dogs, which is great, as it means the bag lasts longer.

Buddy's favorite was the Lamb.

Pros

  • Made in USA
  • Superb ingredient list
  • Lot of options to choose from
  • Easily broken down into smaller treats
  • Lasts a fairly long time
  • A very high value treat
  • Resealable bag
  • Good price
  • Grain free--Good for allergy sufferers
Cons
  • Smell is a bit strong when you first open the bag
All in all Buddy and I give Zukes Jerky Naturals  5/5 Treats!

Giveaway!
First, to get those pesky rules out of the way, this giveaway is only open to US residents over the age of 18. I'll be drawing the winners name on Saturday.

To enter to win three bags (one of each flavor) comment below telling me what the hardest trick you've learned is. (Buddy's was jump, it seemed so foreign to him to be told to jump after us always telling him not to!) You can earn additional entries by liking their Facebook page here and/or following them on Twitter here. Just comment liked/followed to let me know! And don't forget to leave your email.
Good luck!

Cheating

Every day when I wake up, I take Buddy out as soon as I let him out of the crate. Then about the exact time we come back inside and I get his leash hung up, my dad will walk through and ask if Buddy's been out yet. I always say no, so that he gets an extra little walk. My dad is convinced Buddy must be peeing in his crate at night because he never has to pee on there walks, and he is positively befuddled by the fact that the crate doesn't smell like pee.

Hehe.

Buddy's in on the gig, but he won't rat.

Recall

Buddy's recall has gotten great--when he's in a stay. But not having a space to let him roam freely, play, just run around where he'd be safe, I have no way of know what his recall would be like if he broke his leash, I don't know if I'd be able to trust him at an off leash park or beach (not that I would let him off leash at a place other dogs might be, given how annoying he seems to be to other canines. He just wants to make friends!) It's just something that would help my peace of mind to know, ya know? Maybe one day I can borrow someones fenced in yard to test it.

Sorry, Bud. You can't go play today!

Sophie Saturday

Yep, I've still got some pretty bad puppy fever going on over here.

Hello, November

Where did the year go? Seems like just yesterday everyone was cheering for January first, and now we're Stuffing turkey? Weeeiiird.

I don't believe Buddy cares for the cold weather at all. More and more he's hiding under the computer desk when I pull out his leash. Then again, if someone asked me to go outside naked (which is basically what he's doing, having lost all the fur on his back an all) I probably wouldn't be too happy with them either.

Speaking of Thanksgiving, keep your paws crossed! A possible vaca to the mountains is in the works. Neither Buddy or I have ever been, so I'm super excited, though it might still fall through. Hope not!

This is the face of a dog who needs to eat turkey in the mountains this year!

Happy Halloween!

Let me just take a mom moment to say I am sooo sore. I've been trying a bunch of new exercises lately (honestly probably too many new things at once to be a healthy decision) that have left my muscles screaming at me (and also turned me into a masochist of sorts, because I've come to love hearing them scream lol) and walking for hours on end two nights in a row hasn't helped. Yes, two, because my little cousin is just too special to only get one night of free candy (and because we had to go to different churches and festivals because her mom and mine have way too many friends and acquaintances.) And I'm holding Halloween fully accountable for my pain.

How mad do you think Buddy would be if we skipped our walk tomorrow so I could lay in a bathtub of ice? Who am I kidding, he'd kill me in my sleep and feel no remorse. Or he'd just tear through the house destroying everything in sight, which is totally more his style.

Eh.. Happy Halloween!

The Horror of an Intact Dog

In case you weren't aware, dear readers, I am the absolute worst pet owner in the world; According to shelters at least. Why? Because Buddy is not neutered. Studies have shown intact male dogs to be healthier than they're neutered counterparts, but of course, that doesn't matter. His health isn't what's important, keeping my care mainstream is. Great logic!

Sorry for the little rant: I was hoping to become a foster home. But that's apparently not going to be an option.

Someone better fill Buddy in on how neglected he is.

A Hairy Rescue

Took Buddy out this morning to be greeted by incessant meowing from the treeline beside our house. Reef had spent the night outside! And, apparently, he was stuck in a tree. Oh, my poor, brain damaged kitty.

So I clipped Buddy to his tie out so he wouldn't pout about his outside time being cut short, snapped a picture to prove to my family once and for all this kitty was not as smart as they thought, and tried my best to make it to the base of the tree to go get him. It was too overgrown.

I began to call him, which only made him meow louder, to the annoyance of my neighbors. But eventually I did manage to coax him into working his own way down, only to have him jump into my arms and purr so loudly I couldn't hear myself think, while simultaneously shooting his stupidly long fur up my nose and giving me a headache. I unceremoniously deposited him in the front door, as any good hero would, and continued mine and Buddy's walk.

Something tells me he won't be sneaking outside again any time soon.

Morning Scare & Cold Paws

This morning Buddy and I--okay, mostly I--had quite the fright. Living on top of a mountain=quite a bit of fog in the fall/spring, and this morning it was particularly heavy, which is probably why I didn't see the Great Pyrenees in our front yard. (I keep telling myself that, too, so I don't feel as bad for not paying better attention.) In fact, I would never have known it was there, if it didn't start growling at us, definitely not in a let's-play kinda way. Then, it lunged--But not for us! For a little black and white dog I hadn't even noticed. I yelled at it to try and discourage it, but didn't feel confident doing anything else, especially with Buddy at my side.

One thing I learned today, though is that I do have some maternal instincts, at least. As soon as I heard the growling I stepped in front of Buddy, even before I'd fully processed that oh crap, there's an angry dog out here.

All of this took place in a span of about three seconds, but still--unnerving.

Moving on to the second part of our post, we had our first frost last night, which means the grass was not only wet this morning, but also very cold. Buddy sulked the whole time we were outside (which was admittedly shorter than it would have been if the morning had gone differently.)

Of course, if I were to invest in a pair of boots for him, he'd be even more upset with me. I can't win! I swear, Buddy is more of a princess than Sophie ever thought about being.

My 11 answers:
  1. What's the first book you ever read?  If you can't remember, what's your favorite? I've always loved to read, so I can't recall my first book. But my favorite is probably Keeping the Moon by Sarah Dessen. Yes it's cheesy, yes it's girly, but I love it. I still reread it frequently now, and I read it the first time four years ago!
  2. What's your favorite summer time activities? Swimming is probably my favorite, but I also love love love bonfires. Sitting around the fire with your family and friends at night, everybody laughing and playing and teasing each other; It's a fun time all around. Most people do bonfires in the fall, I know, but we do them all year long--mostly in summer.
  3. Rainy days or sunny days? Rainy days, for sure. What kind of life have you lived if you can't take time to dance in the rain? Plus, being all hot and sweaty is gross.
  4. What's the farthest you've ever traveled from home? I've been to Canada before, which is pretty far away from Alabama.
  5. Any weird quirks? I don't know if this counts, but I sing a lot. All the time actually; In the shower, in my living room, in the car, in the grocery store, at family reunions, at school. They're pretty much isn't a place I won't sing (quietly!) I love it!
  6. What's the weirdest thing you've ever eaten? Uhm.. I can't think of anything particularly weird, I'm not all that adventurous when it comes to cuisine.. But a lot of people do think it's weird that I like to eat fries dipped in ice cream or mayonnaise and pickles on my grilled cheeses!
  7. What's a dog breed you'd like to own someday? How am I supposed to answer that?? There's so many I'd love to own!! I want my next dog to be a herding breed though--probably Australian Shepherd or Papillon.
  8. What's your dog's/cat's "color" (for collars/leashes/etc) Buddy doesn't have one, and if I had to pick, I'd just say leather in general. I love leather products. Almost everything Sophie owns is red, though. Her food and water bowl, her collar, her collection of harnesses and leashes.
  9. How did you get your current pet(s)? Buddy was a craigslist ad (yes I know, shame on me; I have no regrets :p He's amazing) and Sophie was (I think) born in the shelter. Or at least, she was only 8 weeks old when we found her there with her litter mates, so we assumed.
  10. What's your favorite time of day? None! I like nighttime better. I often go outside at night to read (with the assistance of a book light, unless the moon is full) or look at the stars or just lay down and think (or sing, of course!). When you're alone at night, it feels like the universe is at your fingertips, like you're capable of anything. To me, at least.
  11. Favorite way to spend your time? Uhm, duh! With Buddy and Sophie! :)

11 Random Facts:

  1. A favorite hobby of mine is writing (obviously) but I use a pen name when writing stories.
  2. I'm terrified every time I go swimming, but love it so much I force myself to swim anyways.
  3. I'm completely addicted to DogForum!
  4. I like planning trips, even one's I know I won't be going on.
  5. I love pickles! I eat them straight out of the jar.
  6. I've modeled a few times (just for a friend of a friend who does photography)
  7. I alternate between loving Alabama and detesting it frequently.
  8. I was in Ag and FFA for most of my junior high/high school time. It's the only thing I miss about it, too!
  9. I want to work in an Agricultural field when I graduate.
  10. I'm starting community college in the spring--A decision I only recently made. I just couldn't leave Buddy.
  11. I go almost everywhere barefoot. Literally. I've been to wal-mart barefoot, grocery stores, even a restaurant once. I always tell people my flip flops just broke, and they never question it!

Lastly, the Sunshine Award!

Requirements being:
  • Thank the blogger who gave it to you. Check!
  • Share 11 random facts about yourself. Check!
  • Answer the 11 questions the blogger made up for you Check!
  • Make up 11 questions for your nominees. Check!
  • Pass it along to as many bloggers as you'd like! Check!

11 Random Facts:
  1. Buddy has absolutely no manners with other dogs; He's very in-your-face (and butt!)
  2. He can't be normal and chase the cats. He has to lick them. Obsessively.
  3. He likes to chew little holes into water bottles and drink from the stream, even if he has a full bowl of water right in front of him.
  4. He will go out of his way to run through a puddle of water, but he hates getting his paws wet by walking on wet grass. I don't even fully understand that one, lol!
  5. He's scared of moving water, like creeks.
  6. He de-fleas the guests by nibbling on their legs and arms. I guess he doesn't want anyone bringing bugs into the house!
  7. He get's extremely jealous. If I'm playing with Sophie or the cats, he'll climb onto the arm of the couch to get in my face and demand attention, or even plop his whole 50 lb self into my lap.
  8. Despite being intact, he has never tried to mark in the house. Though when we went to the shelter to look at adopting, that was another, very embarrassing story all together..
  9. He likes feet. A lot. Especially mine.
  10. If I leave him out of the crate and home alone for so much as 2 minutes, I have to buy all new furniture. Literally.
  11. He has a very serious, reserved demeanor in all going-ons... Unless we're playing fetch!
11 Questions:

  1. Do you enjoy exercise and working out? Definitely! I may not be in shape enough to exercise for long, but I do love running, walking, and I'm starting to get into yoga.
  2. Favorite time of day (or night)? Expanding on what I said earlier, my favorite time of night is about 2-4 am, just before the day starts. I can't really explain why, but I love it.
  3. What is your dream dog breed, even if you're not a good fit for them? Border Collie, or Brazilian Mastiff/Fila Brasileiro. I could never own either of them, but they are amazing dogs!
  4. What is one of your favorite songs and/or band/artist? Song is next to impossible to name lol, but my favorite band is Cipes and the People.
  5. Favorite book or book series? Since I already said favorite book, my favorite book series has to be the Cal Leandros Series by Rob Thurman.
  6. Early bird or night owl? Night owl. My sleep schedule is most typically go to bed about noon and wake up about 9-10 pm.
  7. How tall are you? 5'9"
  8. Damn or "drat" (Curse like a sailor or prim and proper)? Damn lol. I definitely fall into the cursing like a sailor camp, though I try to temper it online.
  9. What's your style? I don't know what you'd label it, but I typically wear blue jeans, boots, t-shirt, and a green denim jacket. You decide what you want to call it!
  10. Ocean or mountains? Ocean, all the way. I love the ocean more than anything, and if I can't go see it at least once a year, I get really depressed. I want to live by the ocean when I'm older, and have dabbled with the idea of studying Marine Biology.
  11. What is your favorite smell? Honeysuckles. They always make me think of summers as a child, when we had this giant bush of honeysuckle growing at the edge of blackberry patch in our backyard, and me and my cousin could spend all day out there, eating blackberries and honeysuckles.

My nominees are:

For the Liebster Award, the Super Sweet Blogger Award, and the Sunshine Award:
And for the Super Sweet Blogger Award and the Opposites Attract Award:
Lastly, my 11 questions for my nominees (Sunshine and Liebster. Shhh. I'm not creative enough to come up with 22!):
  1. What's your favorite season?
